  4.     DIED. Claudio Arrau, 88, one of the premier piano virtuosos
  5. of the 20th century; in Murzzuschlag, Austria. Born in Chillan in
  6. central Chile in 1903, Arrau displayed the talents of a prodigy
  7. four years later by playing from memory pieces his mother had
  8. taught to her piano students. By age five he presented his
  9. first concert, of Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann. For the next
  10. eight decades the pianist would dazzle audiences worldwide with
  11. a unique blend of brute strength and introspective clarity.
  12. Critics hailed his performances of Liszt, Chopin, Brahms and
  13. Debussy.
